Ozarks Campaign to Start on October 10th 2014

The Army Commands are already starting to discuss strategy. The first orders  will be for Campaign Mode and submitted by the Army Commanders and Corps Commanders. They will be due on Friday, October 10th. We will see how quickly the armies find each other and decide to engage.

New Players Joining

We have one new player assigned to the Department of the Eastern Frontier and one about to receive a command in the Army of the Arkansas. There are still a few divisions left if anyone wants to join the simulation before it kicks off.

3rd Division, II Corps, Department of the Eastern Frontier has had a change in command by order of the Confederate War Department. Major General Seymour has been transferred to other duties and Major General Carter L. Stevenson has been appointed to command the division. 3/II/DEF is one of the large, green, untested divisions in the campaign. As a note, some of the regiments in the WAR IN ARKANSAS series that have the highest quality ratings started out as green. With the right circumstance and 800 men, green regiments can quickly become forces to be reckoned with in a campaign sim.

Corps Commander's Template - Part Three (Final Destination Objective)

The Corps Commander's campaign mode template has a place for the Corps Commander to enter the final destination objective for each division. This is written into the cell of the template and assumes that the Corps will complete its daily marching objectives as outlined on the strategic movement section.

The final destination objective is a location that can be identified on the town map for the last town the corps will reach during the day. These will become the headquarters for each division until they are moved to another location. The final destination objectives must be areas marked on the map (e.g. houses, farms, crossroads, etc.) and no two divisions can share the same objective with the exception of towns (e.g. Buffalo City Town) and mountains or woods.

Here are some examples if the Corps' last town to be reached during the day's orders was Buffalo City:

Multiple Divisions could be given one of the following locations as a final destination objective:
  • Buffalo City Town
  • Granite Mountain
  • Hathaway Mountain
  • Prince Fred Knob
  • Lion Hill
  • Warrior Creek Mountain
  • Turkey Mountain
  • Chrystal Point
  • Hand Mountain
One Division each could be located at any of the following locations:
  • J.S. Cook
  • D. Jackson
  • W. Benjamin
  • R. Hathaway
  • F. Benjamin
  • R. Johnson
  • Mt. Zion Church
  • J. M. Tunsell
  • T.R. Warner
When selecting a final destination objective, it is important remember that roads are key. If you locate a unit on a mountain and the game transitions into tactical mode and you need to move it, the division will be exhausted by the time it eventually reaches a road. Divisions placed at houses or towns will be on or near the road. Divisions in woods or mountains will be further from the road and more likely to suffer from delays in movement and exhaustion if a tactical turn is called, the map becomes a battle map, and they need to move to a different location.

Corps Commander's Template - Part Two (Stances)

The Corps Commander sets the stance for his corps as it moves (or even stays in one place). The stance of the corps determines what will happen if it encounters an enemy corps of infantry or an enemy cavalry force.  There are three stances available that can be selected from a drop down menu on the Corps Commander's Campaign Mode Template:

Do not engage: Under this stance, the corps will make all events to avoid engaging the enemy. If the enemy advances towards the corps, it will attempt to withdraw to another map without engaging.

Defend: When setting the corps on "Defend," it indicates that the corps is willing to engage if necessary, but will not take the initiative to attack an enemy force.

Engage: When set to engage, if there is an enemy force present, the corps will attempt to engage it.

The stances are set separately for encounters with infantry and encounters with cavalry. The stance against infantry will determine whether the command simulation moves to Tactical Mode.

Once Tactical Mode is declared, the corps' Division Commanders may start to issue deployment orders for their divisions.

Against cavalry, the corps will fight under AI if it is set to engage and the cavalry is set to engage or defend. (The cavalry will also engage under AI.) The first division in the line of march will deploy, be set to "attack" and brought into rifle range of the cavalry and the left to the direction of AI. If the cavalry exceeds its acceptable losses (set in the Army Commander's campaign mode template), it will withdraw and the corps will continue. If the infantry division exceeds its acceptable losses, it will disengage and allow the next division to continue engaging the cavalry. All engagements with cavalry take place during campaign mode, are under AI, and do not trigger a tactical turn unless an enemy infantry corps joins the cavalry and is prepared to engage.

Campaign Map - Further Simplified

As we draw closer to the start of THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN, here is an even more simplified campaign map that more closely represents the relationships between the towns when taking into account the strategic movement model for the simulation:

Corps Commander's Template - Part One (order of march and movement)

Corps Commanders will issue strategic movement orders and stances for their corps during campaign mode by submitting a Campaign Mode Template. The template is customized for each corps, but includes the same information for each corps commander. Only the template is submitted during campaign mode (with no additional orders). Deployment orders are only given if simulation enters tactical mode.

The template has some fields that are adjusted using a drop down menu, and three fields in which the Corps Commander will type in a location objective.

The template will look like this:

Date: At the top of the template is a drop down menu for the date of the orders. The orders are for the entire day.

Corps Headquarters Location: A drop down menu is provided with options for each of the three divisions in the corps. The Corps Headquarters will be with the selected division during the march.

Order of March: Three drop down menus (each having options for the divisions) are provided in a section with the headings Van, Middle and Rear. This determines the order of march for the day by division. The division in the van (front) will be the division that engages any cavalry encountered (under AI) during the day. If that division exceeds its acceptable losses for the day, it will disengage and allow the next division (Middle) to continue engaging any cavalry.

Strategic Movement: Drop down menus in this section give options for each of the towns  in the campaign theatre. There are four cells that can be filled to correspond with the corps' movement for the day. Movement can only take place between two adjacent towns that are connected by a road on the campaign map. Strategic movement orders are the intentions of the corps for the day. Actual results are dependent upon enemy presence and any congestion resulting from encountering the enemy.

  • Starting Location (6:00 a.m.): This is where the corps spent the previous night and where it will start the day, before any marching takes place. The town is entered in the drop down menu.
  • Location at 10:00 a.m.: If the corps has marching orders for 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., it will reach its first town at 10:00 a.m.   If the Corps Commander does not wish his corps to be marching from 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., he simply enters the same town that was entered under the starting location.
  • Location at 14:00 a.m.: This is the location to be reached by marching from 10:00 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. The town to be reached at 14:00 p.m. is entered here. It must be adjacent to the town in which the corps was at 10:00 a.m. and connected by a road.
  • Location at 16:00 a.m.: This is the location to be reached by marching from 14:00 p.m. to 16:00 p.m.
  • Location at 18:00 p.m.: This is the final location of the corps at the end of the day and will be the starting location the following morning.

Stances: Stances determine what the corps will do if it encounters enemy cavalry or enemy infantry on the march. The stance for encounters with infantry determine whether or not the simulation will move to tactical mode.

Stances will be covered in more detail in Corps Commander's Template - Part Two

Resupplying Division Ordance Trains

All divisions will start with a division ordnance train that has 500,000 rounds of ammunition. As units run low or out of ammunition, they will replenish their ammunition automatically from the division ordnance train. When the division ordnance train is low on ammunition, it must return to a base of supply, which represents one of the army's supply lines. The bases of supply joining the supply lines are as follows:

Army of the Arkansas: Pilot Hill and Mt. Olive

Department of the Eastern Frontier: Lebanon and Yellville

For the purposes of the simulation, there will be no supply depot at the base of supply. Ordnance trains arriving there will meet other ordnance trains arriving along the supply line from outside of the campaign theatre. In order to be re-supplied, an ordnance train must spend the night at a base of supply and there may be no enemy present on the map associated it. If an enemy force is present (even a single cavalry brigade), the supply line will be considered threatened and ordnance cannot be resupplied until the night after the enemy has been cleared from the area (TC2M map).

If an unescorted ordnance train encounters enemy cavalry in the process of moving to a base of supply or returning to its division, it will be captured. Division Commanders may, however, detach a regiment from their division to guard the ordnance train. An ordnance train under guard will attempt to escape while the detached unit engages the enemy cavalry. When an ordnance train returns to its division, the any unit that was assigned to guard it will be automatically re-attached to its brigade.

Orders for an ordnance train to be re-supplied must be given by the Division Commander and include 1)The regiment (if any) detached to guard it. 2) The intended base of supply where it will be re-supplied. 3) The route that the supply train should take.

Supply Trains will move at the same speed as infantry corps.

Order of Battle File Distributed

The order of battle file (v. Sep 26) has been sent out for a final review by the players. After that, it will be finalized and adjusted for the WIA Mod for TC2M. The mod has slow marching times, a variety of units and some additional flags. The finalized version for CMP3 use will be completed on Monday Sept 29.

Work is now beginning on the order templates for Army and Corps Commanders to use during campaign mode. The should be ready by the middle of next week at the latest.

Sign Up Closed

Sign-up is closed and Army Commanders are preparing the corps structures for their armies. There will be divisions available for anyone who wants to sign up at a later time once the simulation is in progress.

(I moved last week and am still in the process of getting settled, but now have a desk and internet connection to continue preparations for the simulation, which will start in October.)

15 September 2014

Campaign and Tactical Mode

THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN will have two distinct phases: Campaign Mode and Tactical Mode.  While in campaign mode, infantry corps and cavalry brigades will move across the campaign map. Engagements with cavalry will take place on "AI" (artificial intelligence) according to contingency stances and formations given in strategic movement orders for the day. During campaign mode, orders will be issued only by the Army Commander and Corps Commanders.

Once two opposing infantry corps meet at the same town, THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN will transition from campaign mode into tactical mode. Where the opposing corps have met will be declared a "battle map." Corps that are not on the battle map will still be able to issue strategic orders during tactical mode, allowing them to move to support the engagement, attempt to engage the enemy at another location, or achieve another strategic purpose. Corps on the battle map will begin a tactical battle. Corps Commanders will issue orders to their Division Commanders, who will then issue orders to their subordinate commanders. This is a "typical" TC2M tactical command simulation.

Tactical Mode will continue as long as there are two opposing corps on the same map, even if they are not fighting. It will be possible to establish lines out of range of the enemy and hold the lines indefinitely without engaging. This may be to await re-enforcement or for other strategic or tactical reasons. The tactical mode will continue until one army has completely left the battle map (and there are no other opposing corps on another battle map). THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN will then revert back to campaign mode until opposing corps meet again.

There is no set duration for either mode of play in THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN. Transition from one mode to the other will be determined by when opposing forces meet, what contingency orders were given with the movement orders (e.g. Do not engage, Defend Only, Engage), and what the commanders decide to do once contact has been made.

You can now contact me (Scott) for more information or to express interest in joining a WIA simulation through a contact form at the bottom of this blog.

10th Divisions Gone...

Both armies has a total of 10 infantry divisions in their sign-up orders of battle. The 9th and 10th Divisions were green, inexperienced divisions. After the decision to limit the infantry divisions to 9 divisions per army, both Army Commanders released their 10th Divisions and kept their 9th Divisions.

There are still divisions available for sign-up in each army. Sign-up continues until September 20th and then the Army Commanders will start to form their armies into corps.

Corps in the Ozarks Campaign

Sign-up for THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN is continuing through September 20th. So far players have signed up for 6 divisions in each army. With the addition of a cavalry division per army, THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN is currently fielding at least 12 divisions.

Once sign up closes, the divisions will be organized into corps of 2 - 3 divisions each. Divisions in the same corps will march and fight together throughout the campaign.

11 September 2014

New Regiments Enter the Campaign Theatre

Each army has 6 new (green) regiments of 800 men. The regiments were assigned by their Army Commanders to fill the ranks of depleted divisions. They have been assigned as follows:

Brig. Gen. Dennis Bradley promoted to Maj. Gen - Takes AOA 5th

The Army of the Arkansas' 5th Division was ably commanded by Maj. Gen. Louis M. Nagle during WIA3, with Brig. Gen. Dennis Bradley commanding the 1st Brigade. Bradley's Brigade held the line in the open field and in support of Federal Batteries during much of the battle of Crane, before moving into the South Younger Woods to assault the Department of the Eastern Frontier's 7th Division.

Maj. Gen. Nagle has transferred to a command in another army, and Brig. Gen. Nagle has been promoted to Maj. Gen. and given command of the division. Col. Frank Samm (157th Illinois Regiment) has taken command of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division and Lieut. Col. Abram Betz is in command of the 157th Illinois.

10 September 2014

WIA3 Headquarters Regiments assigned to Brigades

During WIA3, each army had two headquarters regiments which guarded army headquarters and ordnance trains. The headquarters regiments marched during the campaign, but were not engaged. Each headquarters regiment started WIA3 as a green regiment with 800 men. They have received a quality increase to "trained" as they enter THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN, and they have been assigned to brigades as follows:

65th Wisconsin Infantry: Assigned to 2nd Brigade, Mallory's (1st) Division, Army of the Arkansas
203rd Indiana Infantry: Assigned to 2nd Brigade, Mallory's (1st) Division, Army of the Arkansas

91st Arkansas Infantry: Assigned to 1st Brigade, McCall's (7th) Division, Department of the Eastern Frontier
93rd Arkansas Infantry: Assigned to 2nd Brigade, Swain's (3rd) Division, Department of the Eastern Frontier.

Mallory's 2nd Brigade was heavily engaged through WIA2 and WIA3. During WIA2, the 151st United States Colored Troops was recruited and assigned to the 2nd Brigade. The 151st USCT has been transferred to the 6th Division for THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN.

09 September 2014

Disbanded Regiments

After WIA3, many regiments were down to company size. All WIA3 regiments show a net increase in strength from July - October, representing returned convalescents. This was done by rolling at 12 sided die for each regiment and multiplying the result by 10. Every regiment received between 10 and 120 returned convalescents, but some were still quite small. Any WIA3 regiment that had a strength of less than 150 men after receiving returned convalescents was disbanded and its remaining men transferred to another regiment. The disbanded regiments were:

1. 25th Illinois Cavalry (1st Brigade, Cavalry Division): The remaining men were transferred to the 22nd Illinois Cavalry (2nd Brigade Cavalry Division.  Most of the 25th had been captured during WIA2 in a cavalry action that took place during the battle of White Fox Tavern. It lost its colors and fought through WIA3, but will not enter WIA4 (The Ozarks Campaign).

2. 206th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (2nd Brigade, 4th Division): This regiment lost heavily in the woods during the Battle of Crane during WIA3, primarily against the 1st and 2nd Division of the Department of the Eastern Frontier. Its remaining men have been transferred to the 199th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the same brigade.

3. 21st Missouri Infantry (1st Brigade, 1st Division, Department of the Eastern Frontier): The 21st Missouri was engaged in WIA2 and fought both at The Battle of Raymond and The Battle of Crane during WIA3. Even after returned convalescents, it could not must 90 men and those remaining were transferred to the 16th Missouri (2nd Brigade, 3rd Division).

4. 66th Alabama (1st Brigade, 2nd Division): This regiment lost heavily in WIA2 at the Battles of Tulip Creek and White Fox Tavern and then again to assaults by the 4th and 5th Divisions during WIA3 in the woods at Crane. Remaining men were transferred to the 74th Alabama in the same brigade.

5. 29th South Carolina (3rd Brigade, 2nd Division): The 29th were heroes at the Battle of Tulip Creek, having charged through a gauntlet of fire, captured and brought off one of the guns of Hudson's Battery. At the Battle of Crane, the 29th was already greatly diminished in strength, but helped hold of repeated attacks by the 4th and 5th Division, particularly in the early stages of the battle. Its men were transferred into the 30th South Carolina in the same brigade.

6. 10th Kentucky (1st Brigade, 3rd Division): The 10th Kentucky (CS) lost heavily in attacks across Tulip Creek and close quarters fighting in the trenches near White Fox Tavern in WIA2. The lost additional men while engaged with the Federal 1st Division and Kraft's cavalry brigade during WIA3. Remaining men were transferred into the 18th Kentucky.

THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN SIGN UP STARTING

Sign-up for THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN (WIA4) has started on the madminute games forum.  Madminute Games release Take Command Second Manassas and the forum is the gathering place for an online community that formed around the game. The game is a single player game, but some players developed a "command simulation" methodology to play the game as a group and form a sort of sub-community on the madminute games forum. The community is open and welcoming to new members.  Take Command Second Manassas (TC2M) is now somewhat dated compared to Scourge of War, a newer American Civil War game was developed after TC2M and has multiplayer games. The command simulation community still continues, however, and THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN is the next simulation to run. Sign up has started and will run up to September 20th. The simulation will start in October and run into January.

TC2M command simulations experience the "fog of war" as division, corps and army commanders, with some simulations going down to brigade level. The simulation is run through email, with only one person actually using the TC2M game. Others are provided with maps and issue orders to their subordinate commands, which are then implemented as best as possible in the game. Reports are then given and commanders communicate to each other to try to understand the situation across a given battlefield or campaign theatre and then issue new orders. Once a tactical battle is started, this cycle takes one week per "turn."

New players are welcome in the simulation are given division commands. Each division has three brigades and a battery of artillery. It will be part of a corps including one or two other divisions. The Corps Commander will receive instructions from the Army Commander to move to certain locations on the campaign map. Once the enemy is found, the Corps Commander will give orders to each Division Commander. As a Division Commander, the player will issue commands to each of his brigades and his battery, indicating where and how they should deploy on the map and then waits for reports on what happened. Once reports are in, he prepares a report for his division to the Corps Commander, who receives all the division reports and then reports up to the Army Commander.

It is not necessary to have the TC2M game to play in a command simulation. (Although it does help to get the sense of how things move and to be able to see the actual terrain in 3D instead of from a 2D map.) Some basic understanding of American Civil War tactics is helpful. New players are welcome to register on the madminute games forum and then go to a thread and ask questions and/or sign up. The guys there are friendly and always happy to welcome new players and answer any questions.

End of Entering the Ozarks Test

With the Labor Day holiday and the approach of THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN, the ENTERING THE OZARKS test sim was concluded. The opposing corps approached each other near Yellville, but did not engage. Green units involved in the test sim will get a +1 quality increase due to their participation in the campaign. The test sim helped shape the rules for THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN. The rules are now available in THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN manual

Sign-up for THE OZARKS CAMPAIGN will start in September on the madminute games forum. The command simulation is expected to start in October.
