The template has some fields that are adjusted using a drop down menu, and three fields in which the Corps Commander will type in a location objective.
The template will look like this:
Date: At the top of the template is a drop down menu for the date of the orders. The orders are for the entire day.
Corps Headquarters Location: A drop down menu is provided with options for each of the three divisions in the corps. The Corps Headquarters will be with the selected division during the march.
Order of March: Three drop down menus (each having options for the divisions) are provided in a section with the headings Van, Middle and Rear. This determines the order of march for the day by division. The division in the van (front) will be the division that engages any cavalry encountered (under AI) during the day. If that division exceeds its acceptable losses for the day, it will disengage and allow the next division (Middle) to continue engaging any cavalry.
Strategic Movement: Drop down menus in this section give options for each of the towns in the campaign theatre. There are four cells that can be filled to correspond with the corps' movement for the day. Movement can only take place between two adjacent towns that are connected by a road on the campaign map. Strategic movement orders are the intentions of the corps for the day. Actual results are dependent upon enemy presence and any congestion resulting from encountering the enemy.
- Starting Location (6:00 a.m.): This is where the corps spent the previous night and where it will start the day, before any marching takes place. The town is entered in the drop down menu.
- Location at 10:00 a.m.: If the corps has marching orders for 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., it will reach its first town at 10:00 a.m. If the Corps Commander does not wish his corps to be marching from 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., he simply enters the same town that was entered under the starting location.
- Location at 14:00 a.m.: This is the location to be reached by marching from 10:00 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. The town to be reached at 14:00 p.m. is entered here. It must be adjacent to the town in which the corps was at 10:00 a.m. and connected by a road.
- Location at 16:00 a.m.: This is the location to be reached by marching from 14:00 p.m. to 16:00 p.m.
- Location at 18:00 p.m.: This is the final location of the corps at the end of the day and will be the starting location the following morning.
Stances: Stances determine what the corps will do if it encounters enemy cavalry or enemy infantry on the march. The stance for encounters with infantry determine whether or not the simulation will move to tactical mode.
Stances will be covered in more detail in Corps Commander's Template - Part Two
