Major General Clinton Swain’s infantry division was marching
on the Rockport Road towards Midway when it reached Ryan’s Creek to the west of
Lambert in the late morning. It found a regiment of Ohio cavalry deployed on
the east bank of the creek ready to contest any crossing. Black’s Missouri
Brigade was the first in the line of march and it deployed, opened fire and
advanced to the west bank of the creek. It was too much for the Ohio men, who
fled to the northeast allowing Swain to continue his march eastward to Lambert
town and then onward to Midway.
The cavalrymen returned to the same position and rested
until evening when they were attacked by two Georgia infantry regiments, this
time arriving from the east. The Georgians were supported by three 12lb
Napoleons and drove the cavalry across Ryan’s Creek and out of sight down the
Rockport Pike and over White Tail Hill.
