From Warren, your 2nd division will
screen the right flank of the army and probe towards Arkansas Post. Send 2
brigades and your artillery to Fare Forest, find some good ground there to
defend, and await further orders. Send your 3rd brigade to hold Monticello, and
finally send your 4th brigade towards Arkansas Post by the Warren-Monticello
road and then the Monticello-Arkansas Post road along the river, to scout
Arkansas Post.

GENERAL: I have issued orders to both
divisions and expect the cavalry corps to be on the march by 6:00 a.m. this

brigades will deploy at Boonville and Castete.
Maj. Gen. Hackett has ordered his first
brigade under Brig. Gen. Randall to Arkansas Post via Wellington. Maj. Gen.
Hackett will personally accompany his second and third brigades to Fare Forest
and has ordered his fourth brigade to Monticello.
Conditions permitting and in the absence of
enemy contact, I expect all units of this corps to reach their objectives
within three days maximum for those crossing the river to Ozark and Arkansas
Post.

I have received a report from Brig. Gen. Murrow that Second Brigade, First
Division has encountered a division of enemy cavalry at Ozark. Brig. Gen.
Murrow’s brigade is deployed at Eagle Heights just southwest of town, with the
Eleventh Arkansas Battery deployed on the opposite bank at the Johnson House.
The
enemy division consists of three brigades and a battery, but has not been
positively identified. The enemy
deployed just east of town. There was very light skirmishing yesterday
afternoon, but no casualties were reported.

Maj. Gen. Burroughs reports that a division enemy attacked Brig. Gen. Smith’s Brigade at
Castete starting in the late afternoon. The enemy arrived from Shoal Creek and
Brig. Gen. Smith resisted their advance at Tackett Woods, but has been pushed
back to the east end of Tackett Woods.
He reports losses of about 60 men.
Brig.
Gen. Smith reports the enemy having three brigades and a battery of napoleons.
If the enemy presses in the morning, he will take Tackett’s Crossroads and cut
communication with Ozark.
The
Second Division, I Corps passed through Castete in morning and Maj. Gen.
Burroughs reports both the First and Second Division of I Corps are with him at
Mt. Gilead.

Burrough’s and Glenn’s Batty. Smith’s
Brig. retiring towards Mt. Gilead for supplies. Tackett’s Crossroads at Castete
likely lost by time this report received.
