Eventually, the 19th Indiana Cavalry retreated and broke out of the wooded ridge, as the 20th Missouri fought a rear guard. A little after 7:30, the 20th Missouri retreated as well and the two last regiments on the field, Strang and Ewing all had a clear view of the road to Cross Plains and no enemy force between them and the road. They made their escape before the Confederate cavalry and II Corps could arrive.
Strang and Ewing both have survived to fight another day, but not without heavy loss. Strang lost over 400 men, more than twice the casualties lost in Wales' Division.
But wait.... there's more. There may be some minor firing on another map on Day 7...
