Haggerty's III Corps of the Department of the Eastern Frontier marched from Locust Grove to Ruddell Manor on the east side of the White River on Day 7. They were followed by Piatt's II Corps Army of the Arkansas, which left from Lebanon in the early morning, led by Wingert's 1st Division.
In the afternoon, II/AOA moved through Sylamore town and Wingert's Division crossed the river on a pontoon bridge. The II Corps batteries deployed on the east end of town, on the west bank of the river and began exchanging fire with III/DEF batteries on the ridge to their west.
Wingert's Division was led by Sloane's Brigade, which went forward to cover the crossing and engaged with Willis' Brigade of Smead's Division, which was on the III/DEF skirmish line near an orchard east of Ruddell Manor and across the road leading to Mt. Olive. The two brigades engaged as II/AOA got their foothold on the east bank just before dark.
