Swain's Division has managed to kick O'Neal's Brigade of Dupont's Division off the knoll at the eastern edge of the woods on Buzzard Roost and swung a brigade around the northern side of the knoll to the edge of the fields overlooking Freight Road. Swain's tired men were then confronted by Dupont's reserve brigade (Faulkner) swinging into action as a rear guard.
Further south at the junction, Sourwait and Steward are being pressed by Bowden, Wales and the first regiment of the II Corps to arrive.
Stanley is in full retreat. His batteries, ordnance trains and some lead elements are already on their way back to Big Flat as the fighting still continues at Wilson Junction and the fields to its immediate north along the west side of Freight Road.....
