The location of the Confederate 3rd Division was troubling Maj. Gen. Ormsby's Headquarters for some time. He had just surmised that the "missing" enemy division must be to the south at Princeton, when he heard the sound of artillery to the south and fighting erupted around Tulip Church. The 3rd Division, II Corps is on the field and lost not time launching into Col. Hollosetter's little brigade at the church.
The 3rd Division was originally commanded by Maj. Gen. William Fairbanks. After poor performance on the march, Maj. Gen. Hobbs had him replaced by Brig. Gen. Edward Gowan, who had been commanding the 2nd Brigade. Gowan now commands the division, with Col. James Norris in command of the 2nd Brigade, which is attacking Hollosetter through the woods south of Tulip Church.
At the sound of the guns, the 1st and 2nd Divisions have stepped off once again from the Pickett Farm and are heading back towards the enemy lines....
