The Confederate attack began to stall at Tulip Creek around 8:00 a.m. Parish's Brigade gave way on the right, followed by Williamson's Brigade. Matheny's South Carolina Brigade advanced from reserve to cover their retreat as the two brigades retired to reform behind the shelter of Pickett's Knoll.
Near the center, Wickson's Florida Battery of six 12lb Napoleons was advanced up Willow Road, unlimbered at the creek, and began to pour canister into Hammond's Brigade (3/2/XXVI), which was just north of the junction. The 6th Iowa Battery (Capt. Hudson), having played a significant role at Rockport a few days prior, was at the junction andhad already help repulse Williamson. Hudson began firing canister into Black's Missouri Brigade, which fell back towards Pickett.
The left of Bieber's Kentucky Brigade had begun to give way to the batteries of the 2nd Division, XXVI Corps, but Bieber continued to advance at the right oblique towards Willow - Princeton Road Junction and began firing down the Princeton Road to good effect. Schuyler's Florida Brigade came up from the reserve to support Bieber's left and fired into Richardson's Battery F, Kentucky Light Artillery, which withdrew from the Federal left flank. As Schuyler tried to close a gap with Bieber on his right, he came under canister fire from Capt. Side's Battery D, 3rd Missouri Light Artillery, which was positioned between Osgood's Brigade (1/2/XXVI) and the retreating Hammond's Brigade (3/2/XXVI). Clay's Brigade (3/2/XXVI) advanced from a reserve position further back in the woods to support Captain Sides as the battery was ordered to the rear. Schuyler's left was taking heavy fire from Osgood and the brigade retreated to the Pickett Farm, leaving Bieber's Kentucky Brigade the only infantry left at Willow Creek. Bieber allowed Wickson's Battery to withdraw and then slowly pulled back and, with Matheny's South Carolinians, formed a defensive line in the event of a XXVI Corps counter attack.
Dibble's cavalry was sent to the right and occupies a slight ridge at the Duffey Farm, vigilant against any activity by Herling, whose brigade was observed on the far left of the enemy line.
As at 9:00 a.m. the Confederates have reformed in a defensive line at Pickett's Knoll and a slight rise to its south. It is a strong position for their Confederate batteries. Shelling continues as both sides count their losses from the initial fighting on May 10th.
