Colonel James C. Thayer, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, III Corps, Army of the Arkansas has been killed in action during the assault on II Corps DEF lines at Moore Branch. Thayer had been the commander of the 134th United States Colored Troops and took over command of the 1st Brigade after the loss of Brigadier General Joseph Kitchen during the Battle of Crane. Thayer commanded the brigade through the remainder of the action at Crane, the Battle of Tomahawk (Baker's Spring Branch) and the skirmish with Confederate cavalry at Hawkins Hill.
Thayer is the second brigade commander to fall in the action near Moore Branch, with Col. Hutchinson (3rd Brigade) having been killed in earlier action with cavalry around the Chamte farm. Hutchinson had been the colonel of the 146th USCT until assuming command of the brigade when Col. James Casey fell at Crane.
No Confederate brigade commanders have been reported lost yet in the on-going action at Moore Branch.
