Bradley's Division, II Corps Army of the Arkansas began maneuvering to conduct an attack on III Corps Department of the Eastern Frontier's left flank, the III Corps ordered a retreat. The III Corps, which had been attacking the Federals at Sylamore Bottom, fell back at the double quick a wood line along the ridge to the east. The II Corps re-aligned and advanced slightly, engaging with part of the Confederate rear guard in the Ruddell Orchard and in a corn field next to the Sylamore Road.
The two lines are now face to face a few hundred yards apart, with their batteries firing.
